Why You Act The Way You Do

This book is one of the many that had great impact on my life. This is because it has helped me to understand myself better and improve my relationship with others. It talks about the different temperaments i.e Sanguine, Choleric, Melancholy and Phlegmatic.  Tim Lahaye in this books says our temperaments influences everything we do from our handwriting, the way we shop, eat, drive, child discipline (for parents) to our study habits.

What I really like about the book is found in the last part of the book titled; Temperament and Your Spiritual Life.  This part is about  the spiritual gifts and the temperaments suited for each. It gives a guide on how to tailor your personal Bible study to your kind of person. What do i mean? For instance, Sanguines are lively, spontaneous people who will have problems with consistency with anything they do. So they may have have to make rules for themselves e.g no Bible study, no breakfast or something similar. A melancholy will not have a problem with consistency but may become technically involved in his personal Bible study  and will do little to apply the lessons to his life.

On a personal note, I learnt that the mood swings i am prone to, is as a result of my being a melancholy and that is just the way i am wired or created. It doesn't mean there is something wrong with me. The book also opened my eyes to see my strengths and weaknesses in a new light and how to use my gifts, talents well. I will recommend this book to everyone, especially parents; so you can  understand your children better and be able to help them when figuring out their identity.

It is also a good one for teenagers to read, especially those seeking admission into tertiary institutions to know what career path to take. A career suited to their personality. I  made that mistake of studying a course i am not suited for. I studied Agricultural Management and Extension but i have never worked in that field.  So it is with many people in the market place, struggling to find satisfaction and happiness in a job they are simply not cut out for. Why You Act The Way You Do is a must read and in addition a must have! This is because you will need to keep referring to it, so you need it in your library.

Cheap Books Worth Reading

I reviewed a couple of books, about five of them yesterday on the Radio book club because they were small books and are very cheap compared to their content. Each of these books sells for N250 each, well that is at Oasis Bookshop, anyway. I will run through each one.

Your Money In Tough Times  talks about personal finance from a Biblical perspective.  It borders on topics such as Knowing your weakness, identifying  money problems,  finding abundance in your budget, setting goals and adopting healthy spending habits and strategies for giving on any budget.

Beloved Names of God is one book i like and if you are like me that you love to praise God and don't like to use the common names we call God, then you will like this book too. This is because it lists about 99 classic names of God that has resonated throughout history and brought love, hope and comfort to millions of lives.

Bible Prophecy Handbook.  Again if you are like me, that if you read the book of Revelation, you can't help but wonder what the passages have to do with you in this present age and dispensation, this book will give you an insight. It is a careful study of the Bible's prophetic  passages, offering intriguing insights into each one. From the Old Testament books of Daniel and Ezekiel, to the New Testament's final Revelation, the future unfolds in an amazing tapestry of images.

Top 100 Women of the Bible - April 21st Book Review

I was on air again, Sunday April 21st and the book I talked about was The Top 100 Women of the Bible with the subtitle "Who They Are and What They Mean to you Today." It is a 189 paged book written by Pamela L.McQuade and published by Barbour Books. The Interesting thing about this book for me is, it made mention of women I don't think I have heard about. Take for instance, Syntyche whose account is found in Philippians 4:2-3. An excerpt from the book about the lesson to learn from her  life goes thus "Faithful Christians don't always agree. Sometimes their personal preferences don"t align perfectly, and that can cause stress and contention. It doesn't mean that either
has given up the faith. But all believers need to "agree to disagree in love"as John Wesley said. Their personal preferences should not cause damage to the gospel. When you have a difference of opinion with another believer in your congregation, do you deal with it in love, or does it become an opportunity to battle each other? You don't have to love everything your brother or sister does - just agree with that person that in Christ you will work together for His kingdom, not your own aims.

The book also made mention of Noah's wife and it had this to say: Did Noah's neighbors make fun of him for his ark building building project? Maybe so but as far as we know, his wife never discouraged him from continuing. Perhaps she trusted her husband because she'd seen the evidence of the wisdom his faith brought him. May she walked closely with God too.Whether or not she 'd chosen it, Mrs Noah became part of Noah's salvation mission. She had to live on the ark for many months, smelling the terrible odors the animals put off and trying to keep "house" in impossible circumstances. There must have been times when she wondered how she got into this-and what was going to become of her family. Stress-free living certainly wasn't part of the ark experience. I concluded by saying women should support their husbands.

I remember when I came out of the studio, a man walked up to me, shook my hands and said "Thank you for that concluding part about women supporting their husbands." I smiled and replied that it was my pleasure. But something struck me as I walked down the PRTV stairs, a wife will support her husband if he has proven to her to be worthy of it. Not someone prone to foolishness and inability to carry his wife along in his decisions.  Support may need to be earned. Or what do you think?  I will love to hear from you about this.

Welcome to Home Front Book Club!

Welcome! This book club is the online version of  the book club segment on the Home Front Radio program which airs on PRTV (Plateau State Radio and Television) 90.5 FM Station every Sunday by 7.00pm. And from that five minutes segment which has aired thrice now, a physical book club is to be  birthed with its meetings holding every second Saturday of every month at Oasis Bookshop, along Abattoir/Airforce Road just opposite Jos Flour Mills in Jos, Plateau State.

My name is Modupe Taiwo, I am also called Dupitai by friends and i initiated and anchor the segment on radio and will coordinate the book club. I am your regular girl next door who loves reading and writing and wishes to mingle with people of like minds. Having started reading at an early age, I understand and see reading as a necessity for living just as food is to the body so is books food for the brain.

My number one goal to be achieved with this blog is to improve the reading culture of Nigerians which i think is almost extinct. I discovered that these days, people would rather watch the movie version of any book rather than read the book. I have nothing against movies as I am a movie freak myself but the place of reading cannot be replaced by anything. Like I mentioned above, the food for the brain are the books you read and the knowledge you acquire from them. So, if you want to develop your intellectual potential to full capacity, you need books especially motivational and inspirational books and then, depending on your interests, other genres.

So, on this blog on a weekly basis, i will update you on what happened on the radio version and in our meetings. Oh! Our first meeting is coming up May 18th, 2013 @ Oasis Bookshop at the address quoted above by 12pm. You will also be able to listen to the podcast (i am working on it) of the book i reviewed on radio. For more details about joining the club, drop  me a mail or ping me, my contact details are somewhere on this blog. Please feel free to leave comments as I love feed backs especially with constructive criticisms and suggestions.
